The Friday 'Fro is on hiatus this week, so that we can bring you the sad news that Patrick Swayze has The Cancer — he's battling the dreaded pancreatic cancer, to be precise.
I count myself as a fan of The Swayze, though I can't say I've actually seen much of his work beyond his standout appearances in Road House (above), The Outsiders, Donnie Darko and the fabulously idiotic 1981 motorcycle gang TV movie Return of the Rebels, co-starring Barbara Eden and Jamie Farr. And of course, the immortal Point Break — which, along with La Dolce Vita, Blazing Saddles and The Man Who Would Be King, is one of the few movies I can watch endlessly without ever tiring of it.
I could go at length into the many reasons why Point Break totally rules my world, but such a conversation is probably best left for a night out at the corner pub; buy me a drink sometime, and I will happily extoll its myriad virtues until you feel utterly compelled to run right out and buy the damn thing. (I have heard that the DVD transfer sucks, though that's also another topic for another time.)
Right now, I'd just like to say "Vaya Con Dios" to Mr. Swayze, and salute him by presenting what is, IMHO, his finest cinematic scene — the climactic (in several senses of the word) final Point Break showdown between him and the hilariously wooden Keanu Reeves. The close captioning is a very nice touch...
This is indeed sad. Also sad is that he may be best remembered for "Dirty Dancing" or "Ghost"...
