Hope you all had a lovely Easter, in whatever manner you prefer to observe it. The Easter Bunny brought me shrimp and pork dumplings instead of colored eggs, which suited me just fine — more on that in another post. The night before, Carole and I took a stroll through our new neighborhood down to Venice Blvd near La Brea, to bask in the glow of a local street carnival.
The rides themselves seemed pretty dubious — you could practically hear the metal fatigue. Each carny seemed to be responsible for providing the music for his ride, which meant that you either spun around accompanied (if you were lucky) by the static-y sounds of a local radio station, or (far worse) by an eerie silence. At one point, we heard the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" pumping out of a portable stereo by one of the rides — appropriate, considering that the ride looked at least as old as Mick Jagger. The sideshows looked pretty beat, too; I was hoping I could win a Rush or Molly Hatchet mirror over at the basketball toss, but all they had were mirrors of Jesus, Tupac or the Oakland Raiders — the holy trinity of urban Los Angeles.
It didn't matter, though; I'm always a sucker for a carnival, no matter how sketchy, and I had a great time snapping away with my camera. The best pics of the bunch (like the one above) can be found here in my latest Flickr set...
