Okay, here's something to stamp yer hands and clap yer feet about:
In For A Penny: Raves And Faves, a compilation of rare and underrated Slade tracks that I annotated and co-produced, will be released by Shout! Factory this coming Tuesday. A companion CD to Get Yer Boots On: The Best of Slade — a collection from a few years back that I also compiled and wrote the liner notes for — In For A Penny is especially dear to my heart because it contains a number of killer tracks by Noddy Holder n' the boyz that have never been released on CD (or in some cases, even on vinyl) in the US before. I'm rather proud to say that I fought for (and eventually secured) the inclusion of "Sweet Box," a bludgeoning — and criminally overlooked — slab of post-psychedelic hard rock that I've loved ever since my Lava Sutra bandmate Anthony put it on a mix tape for me back in late '91.
Unless you're a hardcore Slade fan, it's likely that you also haven't heard their ferocious cover of Max Frost & The Troopers' "Shape Of Things To Come," their absolutely jaw-dropping rendition of Janis Joplin's "Move Over," the power-poppish "When The Lights Go Out," the Who-like live explosion of "In Like A Shot From My Gun," or the gorgeous, Badfinger-esque ballad "Wonderin' Y". Forget glam rock -- if you love any kind of hard-rockin' tuneage from the late 60s/early 70s, I swear upon Noddy's mirrored top hat that this compilation will totally tickle your earhole.
(You can order In For A Penny here or here, or just ask for it by name at your local record emporium, if you still have one...)
Sounds like something i gotta get! I've got most of the (good) available stuff, but sounds like there's a couple of obscurities on this.
I've loved these guys since i first saw 'em on "In Concert" and they looked wilder than anyone since Alice Cooper - at least until Kiss appeared!
Hell, all my pen-pals at the time (when you actually had to write letters to keep in touch) used to write in Slade "english" - loved their wacky spellings!
