That's how some folks have described the 1976 Chicago White Sox uniform that came with short pants — an ensemble that the beleaguered Sox only wore three times during the regular season, but which still sufficiently scarred the retinas and frontal lobes of Sox fans everywhere.
There are plenty of photos on the Internet of these softball-style abominations, but actual footage of the shorts in action is ridiculously hard to come by. So I was both stoked and grateful when my pal Taylor — in honor of my impending BH&PG trip to Chicago — dug up this incredible home movie footage from YouTube. Taken on August 22, 1976, one of the few games where the Sox actually sported the shorts, this footage also features some amazing shots of old Comiskey Park (including the center field shower, and a beer crate stacking contest held between the two halves of the double-header) and the old Chicago skyline, as well as the aftermath of a Reggie Jackson pinch-hit grand slam off pre-"Tub of Goo" Terry Forster in the top of the 9th. Check it out!
Love it!! I'm an Orioles fan from way back and it was great to see (blurry) images of that team I remember!
Picked out Brooks Robinson trotting into the dugout after the slam!
Here's the boxscore for this game in case anyone's interested.
